Circulation Services

The library's circulation desk is the place where you may check out, renew, and return library materials. You may also place a hold on an item, report an item missing from the shelves, or inquire about fees assessed when materials are not returned by the appropriate due date. Reference materials and periodicals are not available for circulation, and may be used only on the library premises.

Reference Services

The Reference Services Department provides top-quality reference and information services, in order to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of QU's educational community. It helps library users to develop sophisticated information-seeking skills that will serve their immediate research needs.

Computing Services

Qatar University Library has a number of computers in both the men's and women's buildings, in order to provide patrons with convenient access to the online catalog and databases necessary for conducting research.

Photocopy Services

The library offers photocopying services to all Qatar University students, faculty, staff, and researchers (at the rate of 1 QR per 8 sheets of A4 standard paper).

Hold Services

You can request to be the next borrower of a checked out item , by placing a hold request at the circulation desk.

A Hold Arrival Notice will be sent to you once the book is checked-in at the Circulation Desk, and will be reserved for 2 days , after which the item will be re-shelved if not picked up.

You may place a maximum of 5 holds at any particular time

Interlibrary Loan Services

Interlibrary loan or Resource Sharing has two operations, borrowing and lending where library user can borrow books, periodical article photocopies, videos, DVDs, microfilms and other research materials if it is owned by another library that will agree to lend it.

QU Interlibrary services privileges are available to faculty, staff, postgraduates and Undergraduates enrolled in the University. . It helps to supplement the library's immediate needs especially on specialized collections. There is no charge for loan and no charge for photocopy item delivered electronically. However there is fine for overdue, lost or damaged materials.

The loan period will be assigned by the QU ILS and requested items delivery arrival will notify by e-mail or by phone based on the option of the requester.

All ILS requests should be submitted on QUL ILS Request form and flow of interlibrary loan and resource sharing is based on the scale of service, regional networks and library systems.

Information Literacy Program Services

Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information”

The information literate person is able to:

  • Determine the nature and extent of information needed

  • Find needed information effectively and efficiently

  • Evaluate information and its sources critically and incorporate selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system

  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

  • Understand many of the economic, legal and social issues of the use of information and access and use information ethically and legally

Information Literacy at the Undergraduate level

    The library works closely with faculty members teaching writing courses to deliver integrated library sessions to students who have a research project to write.

  2. First Year students introduction to Research Courses
    Those sessions are usually planned early in the semester and aim at showing First Year students the wide array of specialized resources available in their majors and that they can use during their academic path across different courses (resources such as Micromedex, PubMed etc…)

  3. Core Curriculum Research Methodology Courses
    The library partners with faculty members teaching Research Methodology courses (in English and Arabic languages) to integrate relevant library resources in the students’ portfolios.

  4. Capstone Projects
    Information Literacy sessions are embedded in the courses that require a research project as part of writing in the major. Students are expected to select, collect, and evaluate primary and/or secondary sources that support a hot topic in their major. The information literacy session aims at showing how professionals in their field use and evaluate information sources. Students learn more about scholarly communication in their field of study.

Information Literacy at the Graduate Level
  1. Course-specific library instruction

  2. Support in carrying out research and conducting proper literature review

  3. sessions on using EndNote Web the citation management software

  4. sessions on using JCR and tools for introducing the students to research for publication

All information literacy sessions are conducted in the library computer labs where students access the resources and perform some hands-one activities.
